Introduction
Windfall
Cottage is a traditional fisherman’s cottage (1200 square feet),
circa 1850, completely rebuilt and renovated in 2001 by a master craftsman
to reflect traditional architecture. It is located on a headland overlooking
Trinity Bay and beyond to the open reaches of the Atlantic Ocean. In
the foreground, a half mile out to sea, sits Fox Island, a civilian
fort in the time of Queen Anne. Just below the cottage nestles Ship
Cove, now a quiet wharf and harbour where small boats come and go.
During your stay you will experience more weather than
you’ve ever imagined. Eagles and osprey fly overhead with gulls.
You may see Finback, Minke and Humpback whales nearby — they sometimes
swim close to shore after capelin. If you are lucky you’ll be
able to hear them breathing outside your windows at night (gentle competition
for the fog horn). In May, icebergs bump along the tracks in the seabed
of Trinity Bay, occasionally pulling up within a gunshot of the back
door.

| Notes |
A staircase from the ground floor leads to the master bedroom
and two single rooms and bathroom. For privacy, a screen is provided
so that access can be gained to the two single rooms and bathroom
without disturbing the master bedroom. |
| Outdoor Activities |
In an old weather-beaten shed on the property there are two
new Volvo bicycles with helmets. Softball and glove and a frisbee
are available. There is an electric lawnmower in the shed in case
you want to clear a space for horseshoes or badminton (also in
the shed).
There are flower and bird identification books and maps for walks
from the door (see “Walks and Hikes”). In the hatstand
there is a collection of walking sticks and near the Dutch door
there are berry-picking baskets. |
| Fax, Phone & E-Mail |
There is a fax machine, telephone and if you are travelling with
a computer, you can connect to the phone line. |
| Safety & Security |
Rural Newfoundland is famous for an almost zero crime rate. There
are no threats to property or person here. There are smoke alarms
and fire extinguishers throughout the house and a propane detector
in the master bedroom. |
| Electrical Service |
A modern electrical service was installed in 2001 (220 amp). |
| Heating, Cooling and Water |
On hot days, cross ventilation through screen doors and windows
is easily organized. There is a fan for each bedroom and screens
can replace storm windows. In cooler weather, each room has an electric
thermostat. The cottage has an adequate supply of clean water from
its own well. |
| Housekeeping Services |
The rental includes a full cleaning, with change of sheets and
towels once a week. |
| Safety of Children |
Generations of children have grown up in this cottage and the
surrounding community. However, within 100 paces of the back door
is a cliff with a 20' drop to the ocean where there is a water depth
of 40'+. Young children will require careful supervision at all
times. |
